The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in India runs the prestigious Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship (RRF) program to encourage highly qualified Indian researchers who are employed abroad to return and conduct scientific research in Indian universities and institutions, mainly in areas such as biotechnology, life sciences, healthcare, agriculture, and bio-energy. The ultimate goal is to bring back top talent to support India’s scientific progress. Biotechnology, bioengineering, bio-energy, veterinary biotechnology, agriculture, and human and animal health research are key areas which are under the focus of this program.

Objective of Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship 

To bring back top talent to contribute to India’s research landscape, the Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship aims to entice highly skilled Indian researchers working abroad in biotechnology, life sciences, and related fields. The program will encourage them to return to India and continue their research at Indian universities. The program will provide an opportunity to carry tout heir research in prestigious institutions. Indian citizens employed overseas in biotechnology, healthcare, agriculture, life sciences, and allied fields are eligible for this program. The program also allows researchers to focus on their areas of interest in cutting-edge fields at Indian universities.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for applying to this program is given below:-

• The applicant should be a permanent resident of India to apply under this program.
• The applicant should not be older than 45 years for applying under this program.
• Applicants who are working in any area of life sciences and biotechnology, bioengineering, healthcare, agriculture, and veterinary biotechnology, bioenergy are eligible for applying under this program.
• Only the applicant with a PhD/MD degree or equivalent in life sciences/ agriculture, bioinformatics, and allied areas or M. Tech in biotechnology/ medicine, etc. With at least three years of post do total research experience in overseas research laboratories are eligible.

Duration Of Fellowship 

The duration of the fellowship will be for a period of three years. In exceptional cases, the duration of the award may be extended by an additional two years after a fresh appraisal of performance.

Financial Benefits

The fellow will receive a fellowship grant of rupees 1,35,000 per month. In addition, fellow will receive a research support grant of rupees 13,00,000 per annum for the purchase of consumables, minor equipment, domestic travel, engaging project staff and other continental expenditures to be incurred in connection with the implementation of the project.
