ILRI Graduate Fellowship 2023: Apply Online, Eligibility & Selection Process

The ILRI Graduate Fellowship, or ILRI, is a CGIAR (previously the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research) International Agricultural Research Institute. The International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases in Nairobi in  Kenya, and the International Livestock Centre for Africa in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, merged in 1994 to form the International Livestock Centre for Africa. It is a non-governmental, non-profit organization.

Its research aims to help people in low-income countries build sustainable livestock pathways out of poverty by assisting them in keeping their farm animals alive and productive, increasing and maintaining their livestock and farm productivity, and finding profitable markets for their animal products. About ILRI Graduate Fellowship 2023

The ILRI Graduate Fellowship is looking for a Ph.D. graduate fellow to study in Vietnam on analysing the value chain of wildlife and the risk of interspecies transmission of zoonotic diseases using a One Health approach. The ILRI’s Animal and Human Health (AHH) program will host the winning fellow.

ILRI researches efficient, safe, and sustainable livestock usage in developing countries to promote food and nutritional security and decrease poverty. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research institutes dedicated only to developing-world animal agricultural research. It maintains regional or country offices in East, South, and Southern Asia, as well as Central, East, Southern, and West Africa, and is co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia.

Objective of ILRI Graduate Fellowship

The ILRI is looking for a Ph.D. fellow to design and apply a risk assessment system based on the One Health concept along the wildlife meat value chain. The fellow will also examine biological samples gathered lately from various value chains in order to evaluate the presence of certain zoonotic infections. The initiative’s goal is to preserve human health by enhancing zoonoses, foodborne illnesses, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prevention, detection, and control in low- and middle-income countries. Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire, India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam will be part of the effort.

Through the creation and utilization of information, technology, and products, the AHH program aims to successfully control or eliminate livestock, zoonotic, and food-borne illnesses that affect the poor, resulting in improved farmer incomes and better health and nutrition for consumers and cattle.  

Benefits of ILRI Graduate Fellowship 

The ILRI will provide a competitive stipend to cover living expenses, medical insurance, meet research costs, and tuition. The selected applicant will take advantage of ILRI’s different capacity-building opportunities and will be jointly supervised by an ILRI scientist and the university/academic supervisor.

Eligibility Criteria 
  • A bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine, animal science, public health, or another comparable topic, as well as a master’s degree in a related field, such as epidemiology, ecology, or data science, are required.
  • Skills in quantitative statistical analysis.
  • A background in qualitative or quantitative risk analysis is beneficial.
  • Good programming/scripting language skills (e.g., R and STATA).
  • QGIS or ArcGIS experience is preferred.
  • Availability to travel and spend time in the field.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, as well as the ability to operate in an interdisciplinary and multinational team.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, as well as Vietnamese.
  • Proven record of publication (peer-reviewed).
  • Working knowledge with Microsoft Office applications.
