What Is IASH Fellowship 2023?
The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Council for Higher Education in Israel are happy to announce the fifth call for the excellence fellowship program in Israel for excellent foreign postdoctoral researchers. Israel’s dedication to worldwide scientific cooperation and the advancement of world-class research is exemplified by this initiative. Israel gives top recent Ph.D. graduates (within four years of graduation) from all academic fields the chance to conduct cutting-edge research with prominent scientists and academics in their area in Israel through this program.
The scholarships will be provided for two years at a cost of 160,000 NIS (about $47,000). International candidates who have acquired a Ph.D. from a recognized higher education institution outside of Israel within the last four years are eligible for the fellowship program (not including parental or medical leave) Israeli nationals and residents are not eligible to apply.

Objective of IASH Fellowship
The main motive of the Council for Higher Education in Israel and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities is to conduct a fellowships programme for postdoctoral researchers, promote international scientific cooperation, and enhance world-class research. Israel gives top recent Ph.D. graduates (within four years of graduation) from all academic fields the chance to conduct cutting-edge research with prominent scientists and academics in their area in Israel through this programme. Israel awards outstanding recent Ph.D. graduates (up to four years from graduation) from all academic areas through this initiative. Postdoctoral fellows in the programme will be able to participate in cutting-edge research at one of Israel’s internationally renowned institutions, actively work with their supervisors, and hone their academic abilities in a dynamic and competitive business environment.
Benefits of IASH Fellowship
A total of twenty scholarships will award to incoming post-doctoral researchers pursuing research at one of Israel’s institutions; fellowships will award in the areas of STEM, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The scholarships will be provided for two years at a cost of 160,000 NIS (about $47,000). To contribute the necessary financial support for the fellowship: At least 25% (40,000 NIS per year) of the 160,000 NIS must be spent on the humanities and social sciences, and at least 50% (80,000 NIS per year) on STEM subjects. During their fellowship, fellows will take part in a variety of activities such as day excursions, lectures, workshops, and social events. These events will create a welcoming atmosphere, allowing participants to engage with one another, Israeli academia, and Israeli society
Eligibility Criteria
- International candidates who have received a Ph.D. from a recognized higher education institution outside of Israel within the last four years (not including parental or medical leave) or who will receive a Ph.D. from a recognized higher education institution outside of Israel prior to the start of the fellowship are eligible to apply.
- Israeli nationals and residents are not eligible to apply.
- Candidates who will begin postdoctoral employment in Israel before the deadline are not eligible to apply.
- Candidates must have been admitted into a post-doctoral position under the supervision of a faculty member at one of the Israeli universities listed below (in alphabetical order): Ariel University, Bar-Ilan University, Ben-Gurion University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Open University of Israel, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Tel Aviv University, University of Haifa, Weizmann Institute of Science, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Tel Aviv University, University of Haifa, Weizmann Institute of Science
- Candidates must have the university’s commitment to contribute the appropriate financial contribution for the fellowship: At least 25% (40,000 NIS per year) of the 160,000 NIS must be spent on the humanities and social sciences, and at least 50% (80,000 NIS per year) on STEM subjects.
- Candidates must devote 100% of their time to research. They are not permitted to work part-time in the sector or to complete their internships in hospitals, for example.
- The scholarships will be based on academic merit, regardless of religion, gender, age, or ethnicity.
Documents Required
The following materials, in the order listed, should be provided in English as one PDF file per candidate:
- Letter of application: maximum 2 pages, Arial size 12 font, 1.5 line spacing
- A letter of recommendation from the host supervisor is no more than two pages long on professional letterhead.
- A commitment letter on formal letterhead signed by the rector of the host institution stating that the university would meet the needed financial contribution to the fellowship. Furthermore, the institution must agree to provide the fellow with the required research equipment, resources, and assistance in order for the proposed research project to be carried out.
- Curriculum vitae and a list of articles (just a list), including journal rankings and impact factors.
- A brief explanation of the research, including any preliminary findings if any is available (2 pages).
- Candidates who have not yet completed their Ph.D. must submit confirmation from the relevant authority where the doctorate is being completed that they will complete all of their academic obligations (including thesis defense) prior to the start of the fellowship and will receive their doctoral degree by the end of the first year of the fellowship.
Awardees’ and Host Institutions’ Commitments:
- Fellows will be required to produce midterm and final reports on their study, both of which must be signed by the host researcher. Any modification in or discontinuation of the research must be reported by the host researcher and the university.
- The assistance of The Council for Higher Education in Israel and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities is expected to be acknowledged in any publications that arise from research activities done during the fellowship period.
- On October 1, 2022, the program will begin. Fellows are welcome to begin arriving in June 2022 and stay until March 1, 2023. If you arrive after this date, you will not be eligible for the fellowship. It is possible to arrive earlier (between January 1, 2022, and May 31, 2022), but this will not be covered by the fellowship. Fellowships will be awarded for a two-year period, regardless of when they begin.
- The funds will be sent to the institution, which will be responsible for providing the postdoc with a complete fellowship.
- Fellows are not permitted to acquire another EXTERNAL fellowship at the same time, although they are permitted to receive further fellowships from the host school.
- Fellows are permitted to teach for no more than half a day each week at the host institution.
- There will be no costs associated with the fellowship.

Application Procedure for Fellowship 2023
The application form and any supporting documentation, as well as a current photograph, must be typed in English and delivered to the Academy. All information in this application, as well as the candidate’s academic history, must be entered in at least Ariel font size 10. The candidate’s signature is required on the application. Please note that the candidate is responsible for completing all paperwork on their own.
- The applicant first visits the IASH website of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
- The homepage will appear on your screen, where you have to click on the Fellowship option, then select the Application Form option.
- Now, the application form will be downloaded on your device, where you have to fill in all your details and upload the required documents which we mention in the documents section.

Selection Process
The fellows will select by a committee comprise of members of the Israel Academy of Science and Humanities, the Israel Young Academy, and top researchers and scientists in Israeli academia, based on academic and research excellence. By January 15, 2023, awardees will be notified.
